This most remarkable vehicle is one of only three MK1 coaches to be converted to this specification at the time of the XP64 experiment. Converted from a standard BR ‘compartment first’, four of the conventional compartments have been removed and replaced by two comfortable lounges, each seating ten passengers. The idea behind the project was to produce a level of specification formally associated with Pullman services.
Since arriving at Horsehay, the coach has undergone extensive refurbishment and restoration to bring it up to serviceable condition, although it is currently at the end of another overhaul. Originally carrying BR blue and grey after conversion, it has also carried BR maroon livery at Telford and will emerge from its current overhaul in Carmine and Cream livery. On general steam operating days, this coach along with the GWR brake van are the mainstays of passenger stock
