They are back! Our Santa Special Trains have returned for the 2015 season! Find out more by clicking here.

As always December is a special time of year.  In the run up to Christmas Santa Claus and his merry band of helpers will be making special appearances here at the Telford Steam Railway. Special services will convey excited visitors, young and old, by steam train hauled by our very own ‘Rocket’ to see Santa in his grotto. Services will run on the following Saturday and Sundays in December 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th, 20th and 21st. Tickets allow for one return trip per person on the specially decorated Santa train as well as rides on our narrow gauge Elf Tram. Children will get to see Santa and receive a gift whilst grown ups will be able to indulge in a complimentary mince pie and hot drink.

You can also take the time to browse our well stocked Gift Shop for a wide range of gifts ideal for all the family. The ever popular Thomas the Tank Engine range now includes the most popular locomotives with track packs and accessory sets. Thomas branded clothing includes bodywarmers, pyjama’s, tee shirts, socks and much more. We also a stock a fine range of railway interest hardback books as well as more suitable story books for the younger enthusiasts and a selection of gifts for those Ladies whose interest does not quite stretch to trains. Our prices are very competitive and all monies raised goes to the Telford Steam Railway. So grab yourself a bargain for Christmas and support us at the same time.

You will also be able to purchase a photo of your visit with Santa. Our partner, CDHPIX, will be offering the chance for you to purchase a high quality 7″ x 5″ mounted print at £7.50 per print. Photographs are printed and presented after your visit to the Grotto on the day. Each professional photo sold generates a donation for the railway.

Book Your Tickets

Seats are at a premium and all tickets are for a specific service so please ensure you turn up in plenty of time to travel. Tickets are priced at £6.50 each and will go on sale on the 1st November.

Please look at our timetable of Santa Train services for the month of December. Next to each advertised departure is the available number of places and will be updated continuously as tickets are sold. Please ensure sufficient travelling time to the Telford Steam Railway to catch your booked departure. Refunds will only be given if a service is cancelled for operational requirements. Are you allowed to take your own photos?

    • Mark Paynter says:

      Hi Kelly,

Yes you can take your own pics. The photographer is there for anyone who wants a professional picture doing and each picture generates a donation for the railway. Have you booked your tickets yet? If not then don’t delay as all the popular departures are showing a lot of interest,

      Best regards,

    • Mark Paynter says:

      Hi Louise,

To book tickets please see the listing for the times when you can order over the phone. You must specify a time to travel as your tickets are only valid on that service. There are plenty of seats available. When the box turns red then we are getting short of available seats.

Please can you help me where to book tickets for 2 adults 3 children for this saturday?

        • Mark Paynter says:

          Hi Sarah,

You can book tickets by telephone during the opening times stated on the website or in person at the shop. We currently do not have online ticketing facilities.

Hi. Will the cafe be open on the Santa special?
Also, what is the waiting time to see Santa once at the grotto? I’m assuming that everyone gets off the train and queues? Will this be under cover if the weather is not so good? Many thanks.

    • Mark Paynter says:

      Hi Annie,

The cafe will indeed be open on all days as this will allow the adults to claim their free hot drink and mince pie. We cannot put a time on how long you would likely be waiting to see Santa as it does very much depend on how busy the trains are. Please bear in mind that the trains are running at a 45 minute frequency and there was no impact on services due to any delays in seeing Santa.

      • Amie says:

So does everyone go back on the same train? It waits for everyone to see Santa then returns? Just wondering how long you have til the return train? Is the cafe at the stop where Santa is? Many thanks just trying to see how it all works.

        • Mark Paynter says:

Our trains operate at a 45 min frequency and depart Horsehay 20 mins after the stated departure time from Spring Village. Depending on how busy a particular service is will affect which return service you can catch. You will queue to see Santa past the model railway exhibit and when you have finished your Santa visit you will then have time to visit the cafe which is located in the same building.

  4. lynn says:

How long and where does the train ride take you to.

    • Mark Paynter says:

      Hi Lynne,

The train ride takes 10 mins in one direction. It leaves Spring Village travelling north stopping at Heath Hill tunnel 3/4 mile away. It then reverses to head south along the original track formation to Horsehey & Dawley station where you get to visit the model railway, Santa and the cafe before repeating the journey to arrive back at Spring Village where our narrow gauge tram is located.

  5. Laura says:

Hi, we are looking at tickets for 2 adults and an 8 month old. Is this suitible for us? And is there anywhere to store a pushchair?
    Many thanks

    • Mark Paynter says:

Our gifts are suitable for children under 2 years of age but if you do not require a gift then the child can travel for free. We do not offer a pram storage facility and there is limited space on the train to carry too many prams.

  6. Niki says:

I’ve just been trying to call to book tickets and the number says it cannot be connected. Can you please advise when I can book? I’m calling within the specified times written on your website.

    • Mark Paynter says:

Sorry for any difficulty you may have experienced today but we had a minor issue with our payments system.

  7. Amy says:

I have tried to make a booking for tomorrow however could not get through. There are many seats available can we pay on arrival?

    • Mark Paynter says:

      Hi Amy,

Our phoneline has been extremely busy during the advertised opening times and we are sorry that you couldn’t get through. We’re happy to say that you can pay on the day, just remember to arrive in plenty of time for your preferred departure time.

I have tried 3 times to book tickets for tomorrow afternoon for 1 adult and 3 children. It keeps stating not able to connect and try later…. it is now outside stated time and I want to book for tomorrow afternoon approximately 3 00 o’clock can you please advise. Carol

    • Mark Paynter says:

      Hi Carol,

Our phoneline has been extremely busy during the advertised opening times and we are sorry that you couldn’t get through. We’re happy to say that you can pay on the day, just remember to arrive in plenty of time for your preferred departure time.

  9. David Smith says:

Can you tell me if we could take a well behaved 16 week puppy on one of the Santa trains.

    • Mark Paynter says:

      Hi David,

There are currently no restrictions on the carriage of dogs on our services. We do however issue the caveat that if they make a mess then it is the owners responsibility to clean it up. Also, Santa, unfortunately, has forgotten to bring gift wrapped doggy treats.

  10. Beckie says:

My son has been waiting for quite a while to ride Rocket but doesn’t want to see Santa. Would it be possible for us to just come along for the train ride and skip the visit? Also would we be able to use our membership tickets or do we need to purchase specific tickets as its a special event?
    Many thanks!

    • Mark Paynter says:

      Hi Beckie,

Visiting Santa is not compulsory. You can buy a ticket and see all the other attractions and still claim your complimentary mince pie and drink in the cafe. Unfortunately membership cards cannot be used as all Santa trains are part of the themed event and allowing free travel for members could potentially overwhelm our trains. Hopefully we’ll see you over the weekend.

      • Beckie says:

        Fantastic, thanks 🙂
Will phone & sort out for next weekend. He’ll be very happy 🙂
