Grant Ritchie 272: Goodbye!

The time has come to say thank you and goodbye to the Grant Ritchie 272, you have served us well.

After being brought to Telford on hire from our friends at Ribble Steam Railway in Preston, Lancashire,  we quickly put it to use in place of our beloved Rocket while we worked on repairs, Rocket was really in need of some TLC! (train loving care). The Grant Ritchie has proved immensely popular among our community here in Telford and we will be sad to see it go!

Being built in 1894, it was the fourteenth locomotive that the company built and is in fact the only sole surviving O-4-OST! The loco’s first steaming in preservation was back in September 2016 at Ribble Steam Railways Gala. It arrived at Telford Steam Railway in Easter of this year to stand in for Rocket due to failing it’s annual boiler inspection.

After looking more closely at Rocket, we realised that there was a lot more work to be done to ensure it was safe and secure for all our staff and passengers alike! Work began on Rocket to replace a number of stays and repairs to the foundation ring, the work also included being stripped at the TSR headquarters and transported to Tyseley Loco works for further work to be carried out to bring Rocket back to life.

While we are going to miss the Grant Ritchie 272 terribly, we hope to have Rocket back in action for Easter 2019.

Stay tuned, we will update you all as soon as Rocket is back!
