Introduction
It is the ultimate aim of the Telford Steam Railway (TSR) to operate trains from Lawley Common,
with its panoramic views over Shropshire, to Buildwas on the banks of the river Severn and gateway
to the dramatic and historic Ironbridge Gorge. We can imagine TSR's own locomotive '5619' climbing
the bank to Lightmoor with three coaches in tow, the blast from her exhaust reverberating from the surrounding
hills as she hauls passengers between the Ironbridge World Heritage Site and Lawley Common.
Can it happen? The answer is "yes it can" and it is TSR's intention to bring it about.
Current Operating Limits
We already have planning permission from Telford & Wrekin Council to operate trains between Lawley Common and Doseley road (level) crossing. However, our present operating route for passenger trains is restricted to the section between Spring Village Platform, Heath Hill tunnel and the road bridge at Horsehay & Dawley station. The northern approach to Heath Hill tunnel is presently blocked by several thousand tons of spoil. To the south we have to stop passenger trains at the road bridge as we do not yet have the parliamentary Transport and Works Light Railway Order that is required before passenger trains are allowed to cross any of the public rights of way that cross our southerly route.
The future
TSR's plans for the future include extending our line and working in partnership with local councils to provide a
rail based Park and Ride service for tourists to the Irongbridge Gorge.
